Shed Talk – VIETNAM 1966 by Ross Hobbs
February 10 @ 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Ross will describe his experience as a very young officer in Vietnam. His Engineer unit was the first complete unit on the ground in VUNG TAU as part of the initial deployment of the 5000 strong 1st Australian Taskforce. Defending themselves with 25 rounds of ammunition per man in scrubby sand hills without infantry support was somewhat stressful! This, in itself, demonstrated the chaotic planning and execution of what was effectively the mobilisation of almost the entire Australian Army at the time. His unit’s task was to build a logistics support base including transport, stores, workshops and medical facilities from scratch in 12 months. But like in any war, after the first shot many new and more dangerous tasks were added. Some of which caused extreme excitement.
